The European Council on November 11 adopted the request of several member states to extend internal border controls. Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden will extend checks at their borders for three months, a move recommended by the European Commission in late October as a response to national governments' fears that refugees in Italy and Greece may attempt to settle in their countries. The border checks have been in place in all five countries since May. Of the some 3 million people screened by Swedish authorities from June until the end of August, only 640 were refused entry.
