The European Commission says it is considering doing away with the EU's voluntary code of conduct on the removal of online hate speech and replacing it with legislation and heavy sanctions. The move comes amid the fallout from the data-sharing scandal involving Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. Věra Jourová, the EU commissioner for consumers and justice, said the current system, which sees Facebook and others voluntarily remove material, relied on trust, but that this trust was now eroding.
