The use of encryption technology by web users increased markedly in 2016, with some measures indicating that more than half of page loads in Firefox and in Chrome are now secured with HTTPS, an essential technology for security and privacy on the internet. If true, this would mark the first year ever that most pages viewed on the Web were encrypted. There were a number of factors that drove up the use of encryption, namely ongoing news about surveillance and advances in internet technology.
