The Immigration and Naturalisation Service in the Netherlands has cut spending on the department that makes decisions on family reunification for asylum seekers, despite the department's backlog of cases stretching back several years. Thousands of asylum seekers, especially Syrians and Eritreans, already must wait twice as long as the legal six-month period to request family reunification. Their family members often stay in refugee camps in the region. Currently, 6,160 cases await a decision. The refugee rights group VluchtelingenWerk Nederland is calling for more to be done to catch up.
