Thousands of deaf people have recently demonstrated in Rome for the official recognition of Italian Sign Language. The LIS (Lingua Italiana dei Segni) is not currently considered a formal language in Italy, meaning that it cannot be officially taught in schools and there are no interpreters in public offices, prisons, or hospitals, among other issues. Bills to recognize the language are pending in the two chambers of Parliament.
