Since the Austrian government’s inauguration in December, journalists have been publicly attacked by politicians and media outlets have been defamed for critical journalism. Financial cuts to public media are on the government’s agenda. The new populist government promises to bring major changes to the national media landscape and more severe restrictions on journalists are expected in the upcoming months. The Austrian Journalism Club's president, Fred Turnheim, voiced his concerns and warned of the dangers of that the government's information policy is hostile to democracy.
