A family of Afghan asylum seekers, represented by the Lithuanian Red Cross, has won a strategic case in court. A Švenčionys district court recognized that the family, which has two small children (aged 5 and 8), could only be detained in exceptional circumstances. Since such circumstances were not present in the case, the family was given the alternative to detention – they were accommodated at the Foreigners‘ Registration Center without any movement restrictions. This decision is seen as good case law for dealing with issues related to the detention of asylum seekers with minors.
