Dozens of academics, writers and activists have written an open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel to express their deep concern about her complicity with the attacks on Hungarian democracy. They point out the Orbán government's seizure of public media outlets and the judiciary, its constant attacks on civil society and fundamental rights, and its increasing use of anti-Semitism. Through all of this, they write, Merkel has remained silent - and therefore complicit: "Your inaction has effectively made you an ally to anti-democratic and anti-Semitic forces."
