Eleven German MPs of Turkish origin are under police protection after receiving death threats for supporting the resolution to declare the 1915 massacre of Armenians a genocide. Cem Özdemir, a strong supporter of the resolution, which passed on June 2, was also one of the first to receive a death threat following the vote. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has strongly criticized the MPs of Turkish origin, saying their "blood is impure" and linking them to separatist terrorists. Germany's Foreign Ministry advised them not to travel to Turkey, saying their safety cannot be guaranteed.
