A sobering report from the UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee has denounced Facebook for “intentionally and knowingly” violating data privacy laws, and calls for a compulsory code of ethics for all social media companies. The report on disinformation and “fake news” follows an 18-month investigation, concluding that online companies are unable to regulate themselves. British MPs pointed the finger at Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for a “failure of leadership and personal responsibility.” The report concludes that self-regulation is inadequate and must come to an end.
