Although Spanish democracy is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Spanish dictator Francisco Franco's remains are still buried in Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen), a monumental memorial conceived by Franco to honor and bury those who died in the Spanish Civil War. Some weeks ago, the new Spanish government announced its plan to exhume Franco's remains, and now president Pedro Sánchez has confirmed it during his appearance in Parliament: "No democracy can allow a monument to a dictatorship," he said on Tuesday. "A forward-looking country cannot be indebted to the past."
