Painting Italy in Color: Cities Recognize Children of Same-Sex Couples

On 23 April, Turin’s mayor, Chiara Appendino, registered the children of three gay couples, in a first for Italy. Pioneering a wave of change for LGBT rights, Turin was followed by Gabicce Mare, Rome, and Catania, where, respectively, a couple of twins, a girl, and a boy were registered to same-sex parents. As stated by Appendino, "The love of a family is a right that goes beyond any socially imposed category or definition’ and whereas there is a policy vacuum regarding same-sex parents’ children, it is important to have ‘the ambition of opening a dialogue on rights."
