GroenLinks (Greens) and ChristenUnie (Christian Union) want to introduce specific hate crime legislation to enable tougher sentencing for discriminatory violence. Member of Parliament Kathalijne Buitenweg and ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers have called on Minister of Justice Ferdinand Grapperhaus to adopt a hate crime provision in the Criminal Code. If he does not, they will submit a bill themselves. Two specific incidents motivated this initiative: in December, the windows of a Jewish restaurant in Amsterdam were smashed; and in Arnhem last year, two gay men were assaulted.
