Dutch Intelligence and Security Act Sidelines 25 Years of Criminal DNA Regulations

The Dutch Intelligence and Security Act enables the use of DNA research and the creation of a DNA database by the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). This DNA test is intended for identifying and verifying identities of persons who are listed as a "target" by the AIVD. In practice, the facilities at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) will be used, in particular when comparing a DNA profile of a 'target' with the Dutch DNA database for criminal matters that the NFI manages. The DNA database will therefore be used for issues for which it was not originally intended.
