Older people all over the world face abuse, whether financial, physical, psychological, sexual, material or general neglect. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was on Wednesday, June 15, and for people like 76-year-old Christina Kalango, a farmer from Tanzania, it was an opportunity to reflect on and raise awareness of a type of abuse that is often ignored but yet pervasive throughout the world — in fact, fewer than one-third of governments worldwide have implemented any sort of strategy to combat elder abuse.
