Croatia has received the green light from the European Commission to enter the border-free Schengen Area, but nine organisations and initiatives working with the victims of border violence have made their objections clear.
Many young Europeans take the freedom to travel through much of the Union without having to pass border checks for granted. With the reintroduction of “temporary” border controls, this privilege may be coming to an end.
Almost 1,000 km of walls have been constructed in the Schengen Area since the nineties. That is more than six times the length of the Berlin wall. Europe has turned itself into a fortress, excluding all those that are beyond its borders.
A symbolic protest action was held in Zagreb on June 20 to mark World Refugee Day. The event included a tribute to the many thousands of refugees who have died trying to reach Europe and a call for more scrutiny of the EU's migration policies.
