Our organisation was founded almost 10 years ago with a clear mission: to ensure that EU institutions stand up for your human rights and protect democracy—whether by defending journalists from abusive lawsuits, ensuring that judges can work free from political interference, safeguarding free elections, or protecting the right to take to the streets and protest peacefully.

What Have We Achieved?

Even though extreme and authoritarian political forces across Europe are trying to take away our freedom to stand up for what we believe in, our work is making a real difference. Here are just a few of the ways we’ve succeeded:

• Protecting Journalists: We helped lay the groundwork for the Anti-SLAPP Directive, which protects journalists from abusive lawsuits aimed at silencing criticism of powerful actors who act against the public interest.

• Annual Democracy Health-Check: Our yearly assessment of the state of democracy in Europe is used by the European Commission to put systems in place that ensure political leaders use their power to serve our communities—whether by building more homes, improving access to healthcare, or ensuring our kids receive the best education.

• More Transparent Elections: Thanks to our research and advocacy, political ads on social media are now far more transparent, making it harder for candidates to manipulate voters.

• Stronger Communities: With the help of civil society organisations, we’re supporting communities to grow stronger and more diverse by providing training, resources, and guidance.
