La Commissione Europea dovrebbe "spingere tutti gli stati membri UE a riconoscere i matrimoni omosessuali," ha dichiarato il primo vice-presidente della Commissione Europea Frans Timmermans durante una manifestazione dell'ONG per i diritti dei gay ILGA-Europe. Sebbene riconosca che la CE non possa legiferare sui matrimoni, ha espresso la speranza che gli stati membri accettino i matrimoni omosessuali celebrati in altri paesi UE. Al momento otto stati consentono matrimoni omosessuali. La Finlandia li consentirà dal 2017, la Slovenia ne sta discutendo e l'Irlanda ha votato a favore a maggio.
