L'Ucraina ha presentato un ricorso contro la Russia di fronte alla Corte Internazionale di Giustizia dell'Aia. La Russia è accusata di aver annesso in maniera illegale la Crimea, finanziando e fornendo armi ai gruppi separatisti nell'Ucraina dell'est e perseguendo le etnie ucraine e tatare in Crimea. L'Ucraina chiede alla Corte anche di considerare la Russia responsabile di aver abbattuto il volo MH17 della Malaysian Airlines nel 2014. Secondo un'inchiesta indpendente del 2016, le 298 persone a bordo sono morte per mano dei separatisti russi che hanno sparato un missile contro l'aereo.
