Il 23 maggio i ministri dell'Unione Europea hanno approvato una proposta per incentivare le aziende social come Facebook, Twitter e YouTube a rimuovere i video con discorsi di odio. La proposta, che diventerebbe la prima legge europea sul tema, deve ancora essere approvata dal Parlamento Europeo per entrare in vigore. La proliferazione di discorsi di odio e fake news sui social ha aumentato le pressioni sulle aziende affinché rimuovano immediatamente questi contenuti, ma gli attivisti su internet avvertono che un eccessivo inasprimento potrebbe compromettere la libertà di parola.
