Il VVD ha pubblicato una pubblicità sui quotidiani olandesi con il messaggio: "Comportati bene o vattene". In seguito, Rutte ha sottolineato che chiunque può scegliere di andarsene. "Se non ti piace restare qui, vattene!" Tali affermazioni sono state accolte da critiche del Parlamento. Rutte è accusato di usare tecniche populiste per riconquistare i voti del partito di estrema destra (PVV) guidado da Geert Wilders.
