Il segretario parlamentare maltese in corsa per la presidenza UE, Ian Borg, ha dichiarato che l'UE deve essere flessibile per soddisfare le esigenze più disparate degli stati membri e ripristinare la fiducia nel progetto europeo. La piccosa isola del Mediterraneo subentrerà alla presidenza di turno nel Consiglio dell'Unione Europea il 1 gennaio 2017. Sarà la prima volta che Malta assume tale ruolo da quando è entrata nell'UE. Tra le priorità della presidenza maltese ci saranno immigrazione, mercato unico, sicurezza, inclusione sociale, paesi vicini all'Europa e questioni marittime.
