Il giornalista Can Dündar, difensore della libertà di parola e di espressione in Turchia, il leader tataro della Crimea Mustafa Dzemilev, le sopravvissute yazide e attiviste Nadia Murad e Lamiya Aji Bashar, insieme allo studioso uiguro Ilham Tohti sono i candidati di quest'anno al Premio Sakharov. Ogni anno il Parlamento Europeo attribuisce il Premio Sakharov a personalità eccezionali e ad organizzazioni che difendono i diritti umani e le libertà fondamentali. Il vincitore sarà scelto ad ottobre. Lo scorso anno il premio è andato a Raif Badawi.
