I parlamentari olandesi hanno votato in massa per vietare il burqa in alcuni luoghi pubblici, comprese scuole e ospedali. Il voto del 29 novembre è solo l'ultimo intervento dei governi europei contro il velo; a ottobre il Parlamento Belga ha approvato una norma per vietare il velo in pubblico. La mozione olandese vieta "ogni tipo di abbigliamento che copra totalmente il volto" negli edifici governativi. E' stata approvata con 132 voti su 150 aventi diritto, compresa la coalizione di governo del Primo Ministro Mark Rutte. Per diventare legge il disegno dovrà ora essere approvato dal Senato.
