Dopo 4 ore di dibattito presso il Consiglio per i Diritti Umani dell'ONU, 23 membri del Consiglio hanno votato per la creazione di una nuova posizione di esperto indipendente per la protezione dalla violenza e dalla discriminazione contro lesbiche, gay, bisessuali, transessuali (LGBT). 18 membri hanno votato contro e 6 si sono astenuti. Per la prima volta, l'attività su questo tema sarà istituzionalizzata presso il Consiglio e si relazionerà periodicamente su questi temi in sede di Consiglio e di Assemblea Generale. L'esperto sarà nominato a settembre, inizialmente per un periodo di 3 anni.
