Durante l'evento, i membri del gruppo Kick out Black Pete hanno organizzato una protesta, nonostante il fatto che il sindaco di Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, avesse annunciato un divieto temporaneo di organizzare manifestazioni. I manifestanti l'hanno ignorato e sono stati brutalmente arrestati. L'Ufficio del Pubblico Ministero ritiene che la polizia abbia gestito la situazione in maniera adeguata e che l'uso della violenza fosse legittimo.
