E' stata salutata come una "giornata storica" quella in cui l'Irlanda ha ufficialmente riconosciuto i nomadi come una minoranza etnica indigena. L'annuncio, dato il 1 marzo, ha ricevuto una standing ovation nel Parlamento Irlandese e il Primo Ministro Enda Kenny ha dichiarato che lo status di "gruppo etnico definito" significa che i nomadi andranno incontro ad un "futuro migliore con meno difficoltà". Si stima che circa 30,000 persone in Irlanda, vale a dire lo 0.6% circa della popolazione, siano appartenenti alla comunità nomade.
