Minori non accompagnati di appena 12 anni vengono trattenuti per settimane in condizioni sovraffollate e insicure in Sicilia, secondo Human Rights Watch. Alcuni bambini restano anche un mese nell'"hotspot" di Pozzallo, individuato per l'identificazione rapida dei richiedenti asilo. Per via del cronico sovraffollamento, i bambini dormono su letti a castello o materassi sul pavimento accanto ad adulti estranei. "Pozzallo non è un posto adatto a un bambino, ancor meno per periodi prolungati," ha dichiarato Judith Sunderland, direttore per l'Europa e l'Asia Centrale di Human Rights Watch.
