Il 21 dicembre 2017 Julian Assange, fondatore di Wikileaks, ha ottenuto la cittadinanza ecuadoriana, lo ha confermato il ministro degli esteri Maria Fernanda Espinosa. Assange aveva presentato richiesta a settembre e vive nell'Ambasciata dell'Ecuador di Londra dal 2012, quando ha ottenuto asilo politico. Espinosa ha dichiarato che l'Ecuador rispetta tutte le leggi nazionali e internazionali e che tutela i diritti umani in capo ad Assange in questo caso delicato. Tuttavia il ministro degli esteri britannico ha dichiarato che Assange rischia tuttora l'arresto qualora lasciasse l'ambasciata.
