Islanda, Danimarca e Austria sono i paesi più pacifici al mondo, secondo il Global Peace Index 2016. Quattro altri stati europei - Portogallo, Repubblica Ceca, Svizzera e Slovenia - rientrano tra i primi 10, insieme a Nuova Zelanda, Giappone e Canada. All'altro estremo della classifica ci sono i paesi afflitti da guerre e conflitti: Siria, Sud Sudan e Iraq. Il Portogallo, che ha concluso il suo piano UE/IMF di adeguamento economico nel 2014, è salito di nove posti, fino al quinto. La classifica è compilata annualmente dall'Istituto per l'Economia e la Pace.
