Una nuova indagine medica indipendente di Medici per i Diritti Umani (MEDU), con il sostegno di Open Society Foundations, ha gettato nuova luce sul caso di Stefano Cucchi. Secondo il rapporto - presentato il 16 ottobre da MEDU insieme alle associazioni Antigone e A Buon Diritto - ci sarebbe una connessione causale tra le violenze subite da Stefano, il conseguente trauma psichico e la sua drammatica morte: "E' stato picchiato due volte e alla fine è morto per lo shock... Si è trattato realmente di un caso di tortura," sono le conclusioni a cui arriva il rapporto di MEDU.
