Per via delle pressioni di vari stati membri, la Commissione Europea ha proposto emendamenti alla zona Schengen per consentire controlli ai confini interni per 3 anni. Per il Commissario Affari Interni Dimitris Avramopoulos servono riforme per fronteggiare le minacce alla sicurezza. I controlli alle frontiere sono stati introdotti pr la prima volta nel settembre 2015 e sono stati poi estesi circa 50 volte, rispetto alle 36 tra il 2006 e il 2015. Il piano originale era di superarli entro fine 2016, ma la CE continua a concedere proroghe nonostante le argomentazioni vaghe degli stati membri.
