L'utilizzo della crittografia da parte degli utenti della rete è aumentato molto nel 2016, in misura tale che oltre la metà delle pagine aperte su Firefox e Chrome ora sono messe al sicuro tramite l'HTTPS, una tecnologia essenziale per la sicurezza e la privacy su internet. Se così fosse, si tratterebbe del primo anno in cui la maggior parte delle pagine aperte sul web sono crittografate. Molte ragioni hanno portato all'uso della crittografia, in particolare le ultime notizie sulla sorveglianza e i progressi della tecnologia in rete.
