Nel 2016 ci sono state quasi 10 aggressioni al giorno contro migranti in Germania, lo rivela il Ministero degli Interni. 560 persone hanno subito violenza, compresi 43 minori. Tre quarti delle aggressioni sono avvenute fuori dalle strutture di accoglienza, quasi 1,000 hanno preso di mira abitazioni. La decisione della cancelliera Merkel di aprire i confini tedeschi alle persone in fuga dalla guerra in Siria o altrove ha portato ad un aumento dei crimini di odio, nonostante il numero di richiedenti asilo arrivati in Germania nel 2016 sia sceso da oltre 600,000 dell'anno precedente a 280,000.
