Dopo il referendum sul matrimonio omosessuale in Irlanda, crescono le pressioni sul governo tedesco. In Germania le unioni civili non garantiscono gli stessi diritti dei matrimoni. Un esempio è la legge sulle adozioni. Dal 2014 le coppie lesbiche o gay possono adottare un bambino soltanto se era già stato adottato in precedenza da uno dei due partner. Finora il partito conservatore CDU/CSU si è fermamente opposto al diritto all'adozione e al matrimonio, richiamandosi alla Costituzione che tutela matrimonio e famiglia. Ad ora 20 paesi hanno esteso il matrimonio alle coppie dello stesso sesso.
