Per il 3° anno consecutivo in Europa le overdosi sono in crescita, secondo l'ultimo rapporto dell'European Monitoring Centre for Drugs Addiction (EMCDDA). In base ai dati del 2015, in tutta l'UE, Norvegia e Turchia, si sono registrate 8,441 morti per overdose - rispetto alle 7,950 dell'anno precedente. Le cause principali sono gli oppioidi - in primis l'eroina - spesso usata in combinazione con alcool e benzodiazepine. Le morti correlate a eroina sono più alte nel Regno Unito, Irlanda, Scozia e Turchia, mentre l'Estonia è il paese con più alto tasso di mortalità legato all'abuso di droghe.
