In vista del dibattito sull'immigrazione nell'UE previsto per il 14 dicembre, la Commissione Europea ha proposto una roadmap politica per arrivare ad un accordo su come portare avanti una politica migratoria sostenibile. Un accordo su una politica UE sull'immigrazione e l'asilo è necessaria e la Commissione ritiene che solo un approccio globale che coinvolga tutti gli stati membri possa funzionare. Il Presidente della Commissione Europea Jean-Claude Juncker ha dichiarato che "l'Europa ha urgente bisogno di strumenti per gestire l'immigrazione in modo responsabile ed equo."
