La Commissione Europea sta rivedendo le norme sui controlli alle frontiere interne ed esterne all'area Schengen. La principale novità potrebbe essere usare il terrorismo e non l'immigrazione come motivo per i controlli interni. La Commissione agisce su pressione di Germania, Austria, Danimarca, Svezia e della Norvegia che vuole estendere i controlli alle frontiere interne oltre il termine già prolungato di novembre previsto dalle norme in vigore. La CE potrebbe proporre di estendere i controlli senza limiti. Le regole attuali consentono di reintrodurre controlli interni solo temporaneamente.
