Con la votazione del 21 novembre all'Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite, il neo-nominato esperto ONU contro la violenza e la discriminazione in base all'orientamento sessuale e all'identità di genere è stato autorizzato a continuare il suo lavoro. Il voto è arrivato dopo che 850 ONG di 156 paesi hanno chiesto agli stati membri dell'ONU di considerare i diritti di lesbiche, gay, bisessuali e transgender (LGBT) diritti umani. Il voto ha respinto la proposta avanzata dai paesi africani di interrompere le attività dell'esperto finché l'ONU non avesse discusso le "basi legali" del suo mandato.
