La Commissione Europea ha approvato una proposta che sollecita gli stati membri a rendere l'acqua potabile accessibile a tutti. Gli stati devono adottare misure per promuovere un buon uso dell'acqua, incoraggiando, per esempio, l'uso dell'acqua del rubinetto negli edifici pubblici e nei ristoranti e collocando fontane pubbliche in molte città. 20 milioni di europei non hanno accesso all'acqua potabile, soprattutto nei paesi in cui ci sono comunità vulnerabili ed emarginate. Nei paesi in cui l'acqua è gestita privatamente le aziende sono autorizzate a interrompere la fornitura a chi non paga.
