La Guardia Costiera Italiana ha salvato 86 migranti e recuperato i corpi di 8 donne morte nella tragedia del 6 gennaio. Secondo Flavio Di Giacomo, portavoce italiano dell'Organizzazione Internazionale per le Migrazioni, i morti del primo naufragio del 2018 nel Mediterraneo sarebbero 64. Almeno 3,116 migranti hanno perso la vita in questo mare nel 2017 e dal primo gennaio di quest'anno 417 persone sono state salvate e portate in Italia.
