Il 6 aprile, il 32.2% dell'elettorato olandese ha votato al referendum consultivo sul Trattato di Annessione dell'Ucraina all'Unione Europea. Il 30% del quorum (il minimo necessario per la validità legale del referendum) è stato quindi a malapena raggiunto. Dei votanti, il 61.1% ha votato contro e il 38.% ha votato a favore. Nelle settimane prima del referendum, ci sono stati dibattiti sui diritti umani e sulla corruzione dilagante in Ucraina. Il governo dovrà ora considerare i futuri passi ma non potrà ratificare il trattato così com'è, ha dichiarato il Primo Ministro Mark Rutte.
