Países Bajos no ampliará el periodo tras el cual se puede acceder a la ciudadanía neerlandesa. El 3 de octubre, el Senado votó por mayoría en contra de extenderlo de 5 a 7 años. El Gobierno propuso la ampliación a finales de 2013 pues alegaba que garantizaría que los extranjeros puedan integrarse y participar mejor en la sociedad. La ampliación del periodo de naturalización era un deseo explícito del partido VVD de la coalición gobernante. Klaas Dijkhoff, el recién nombrado ministro de Defensa, había defendido la propuesta en su anterior cargo de secretario de Seguridad y Justicia.
