El ex empleado de la NSA, Edward Snowden, el periodista, Glenn Greenwald, y la cineasta, Laura Poitras - el trío que sacó a la luz la noticia del espionaje por parte de la NSA - recibieron el premio Carl von Ossietzky en Berlín. El premio honra a quienes exhiben coraje cívico o un compromiso con la difusión y defensa de los DDHH. La Liga Internacional para los Derechos Humanos, que concede el premio desde 1962, dijo que Snowden fue elegido por su "decisión trascendental de conciencia al no temer sacrificar su libertad personal" al exponer el "abuso de poder" ejercido por los EEUU y Alemania.
