Tras el referendum irlandés sobre matrimonio del mismo sexo, aumenta la presión sobre el gobierno alemán, donde las uniones civiles no disfrutan de los mismos beneficios que los matrimonios. Un ejemplo es la ley de adopción. Desde 2014, las parejas del mismo sexo solo pueden adoptar si una de ellas ya había adoptado previamente al niño. De momento, el partido conservador CDU/CSU se opone enérgicamente al derecho a la adopción conjunta y a abrir el matrimonio. Para justificarlo, se apoyan en que la Constitución protege el matrimonio y la familia. Hasta ahora 20 países han abierto el matrimonio.
