Le ministre belge en charge de la migration a vivement été critiqué pour avoir organisé l'expulsion de migrants soudanais. Plusieurs expulsé.es ont déclaré avoir été torturé.es à leur arrivée. Le premier ministre belge, Charles Michel, a défendu son Secrétaire d'État à la migration, M. Francken, des accusations portées contre lui, affirmant que ce dernier "n'avait pas donné tous les détails" au moment d'indiquer qu'il n'y aurait plus d'expulsions avant fin janvier. En réalité, un vol de retour a été organisé, avant d'être annulé. Aucune expulsion n'aura lieu avant que l'enquête soit finalisée.
