La Tribunal fédéral constitutionnel allemand a estimé que les citoyen.nes doivent se voir offrir l'option de déclarer un troisième genre sur l'acte de naissance. Le jugement, considéré comme une "petite révolution" par les activistes, fait de l'Allemagne le premier pays à proposer aux personnes intersexuées le choix de s'identifier ni comme homme ni comme femme. Le gouvernement a désormais jusqu'à fin 2018 pour adopter une loi établissant une catégorie autre que les catégories homme/femme. L'affaire a été portée par une femme dont les chromosomes ne confirment aucun des deux sexes.
