Des chercheurs des universités de Standford et Priceton ont révélé que 72% des internautes peuvent être identifiés en comparant leur historique de navigation web avec les informations disponibles sur les réseaux sociaux. Le projet est parvenu à découvrir l'identité de 374 historiques anonymes grâce à des liens partagés sur Twitter. Cela suscite certaines inquiétudes car si les sites n'ont pas directement accès à l'historique, les courtiers en données peuvent les assembler via les cookies et procéder à une éventuelle identification.
