Antonio Tajani, ex commissario europeo e braccio destro di Silvio Berlusconi, è stato eletto martedì a presidente del Parlamento Europeo. Il politico conservatore italiano è stato eletto al quarto turno di votazioni, battendo il candidato socialista Gianni Pitella. Tajani subentra a Martin Schulz, che è stato presidente per cinque anni. I liberali europei (ALDE) e i conservatori (EPP), uniti nel sostenere Tajani, promettono di frenare l'influenza dei populisti anti-UE. Con Tajani, il centro-destra è ora a capo di tre delle principali istituzioni dell'Unione Europea.
