Thousands of people in Malta protested over the weekend against the government's plans to change Malta's defamation and libel laws. The draft law uses broad definitions, giving rise to fear that ordinary citizens would be required to register before being able to express their views online. The leader of the large Sunday protest against the plan, Simon Busuttil, said the legislation would be "the beginning of the end of freedom of expression on the internet."
